Queens of Leon: 2011

On April 8th, 2011 I was able to attend the Kings of Leon/Band of Horses concert at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma! The day began by skipping school to drive four hours up to Tulsa. Once Anna and I arrived, we quickly got in line so that we could run and be on the rail on the right side of the stage (to be near Jared, duh). Everybody in the line was confused about if it was for GA or not, so we walked to the side of the building and found a second, much SHORTER line. After an hour of waiting, we ordered pizza and shared with all the other kiddos. Anna, me, and some other kids from Arkansas walked inside the lobby to cool down. “Little shaken babies and drunkards seem to all agree” was echoing through the lobby as the Kings of Leon practiced. At that moment, my blood pressure spiked sky high because I was SO excited.

I’m pretty proud to say that when the doors opened, I was the first person to receive a wrist band. #winning! I ran like an idiot through the arena to the floor and directly in front of the right mic. Some drunk girls were standing behind me and Anna, calling us “princess” and telling us how they snuck Vodka and brownies in their panties. I made a deal with the security guard to get me a pick (but he failed miserably).

Band of Horses was pretty good. It was the first time I had even heard of them, but I enjoyed them a lot. I’d see another one of their shows, I think.

When the Kings began Radioactive, I was excited - but when they followed up with Crawl (one of my favorites), I thought I was in heaven. I have to say that the songs and order of the set list was nothing short of perfect. The most defining moment was when they played The Immortals. The song itself is inspiring, but to hear it live and absorb the entire moment makes you feel infinite. I closed my eyes and just let it all sink in. I didn’t want to ever forget that moment of immense eternity.

Since Anna and I were on the rail, we decided to actually get in the crowd during the encore. Screaming at the top of your lungs “Your sex is on fire!” is fun, especially when you have hundreds of other people joining you. When we turned to look around, we spotted Mr. Ivan Followill in the front row and waved like 5 years olds at the ice cream truck. We were so happy to see him again!

After the show, we stayed a few minutes to get a picture with Ivan. He invited us backstage to hang out with the family. When we got backstage we were on the hunt for Dani, but she was no where to be found! Ivan kept telling us how excited he was to eat some gumbo, so of course we had to go get some. In the hospitality room all the Kings were playing ping-pong. Apparently Nacho is really good! It was so sweet because Jessie Baylin, Nathan’s wife, was doctoring his shoulder up. AW! Caleb was hanging with Lily, who is a fox by the way. And Jared was chilling with his buddies DeMarco Murray and Sam Bradford, whom of which are cool people. And Matthew was talking to a little bit of everybody.

And and I decided to try to find Dani again, and succeeded! We talked for a while with her and Dylan, then with Nacho’s mom. She was a sweet woman, very kind. She was so surprised to see us because she remembered us from the Diamond Ballroom in 2006!

After a while we decided to go ask for picture with the boys. Nathan wanted to hold the 2006 picture of us with Ivan in the new picture. Then we took a picture with Jessie - a cute one with just us three girls and then one with Jared creepin’ in the background lol. Matthew was next - he seemed shy, but maybe he was just worried about his wife and baby Knox since it was close to the due date! He just seemed like a teddy bear to me. Then Jared. He recognized us and told us we “picked a good side of the stage” and I had to agree. Unfortunately we couldn’t find Caleb, maybe he disappeared off with Lily?

After we left the BOK Center, we went back to our hotel only to find that their after party was there in the penthouse. We were all on the same elevator, but weighed too much, so half of us had to take a different elevator. Kinda funny.

Needless to say, it was an epically extraordinary night! :)
